Crestmead Business PC Loses Power Without Warning

← All job diary entries

An existing customer contacted David’s Computer Repairs after the PC used primarily for CAD work at his Crestmead business began crashing.

During my visit, the computer started normally and ran for around 20 minutes while I carried out diagnostics. Then it abruptly lost power. Repeated restart attempts produced the same result—it powered on briefly, then switched off again.

The symptoms pointed towards a power supply fault. After I replaced the power supply, the PC started successfully. The customer will monitor it over the next few days before we consider the problem fully resolved.

The diagnosis also revealed an unexpected concern. Although the customer had purchased the computer only six months earlier for around $1,700, its motherboard model dated from 2013 and its Intel i7 processor from 2014. It contained mixed DDR3 memory, and the processor was not officially supported for Windows 11.

Despite having a newer RTX 4060 graphics card, the computer was still built around an ageing platform. For a business relying on CAD, a suitably specified modern PC would offer more performance headroom, particularly as drawings and projects become more complex. A newer graphics card alone does not modernise the whole computer.

The customer was disappointed to discover the age of the hardware, which he said had not been made clear when purchasing it.

Older computers can still be useful, but their specifications, condition and suitability for the intended work matter. Further testing may be needed if this PC develops additional symptoms.
