Heritage Park: How the Job Diary Came About

← All job diary entries

While driving home from a computer repair job, I had an idea: I should add a job diary to my website.

Every job has a story—the problem a customer is having, what I find when I investigate, and how I get things working again. A diary would let me share some of that work and give people a better idea of what I do.

The part that really surprised me is that I can update this diary from my phone without typing a single word.

After a job, I can open ChatGPT and simply talk through what happened: the problem, what I checked, what I fixed and how it turned out. ChatGPT turns that conversation into a diary entry. I can read it, dictate any corrections, then say, “Publish that to the website”—and it appears here.

There’s a connection behind the scenes between ChatGPT, my website files on GitHub and the hosting service. But from my end, it’s just a conversation on my phone. I don’t have to sit down at a computer, log into a website editor or copy and paste anything. I don’t type a single letter—not to write the entry, make corrections or ask for it to be published. I do all of it by speaking.

After more than 40 years working with computers, that still amazes me. It makes keeping a diary of my work practical, even after a busy day of call-outs. I wish I’d had this years ago.

That’s how this Job Diary came about. It gives me a practical way to share repair stories while the details are fresh, without including customers’ names or private information.

The repairs still happen in person. This just makes it easier to tell the stories afterwards.
